A monk is not a true monk until he has purified his own mind. Although he may wear a saffron robe, if he is not honest and doesn’t control himself from anger, greed, attachment, criticizing, and desire, he is not worthy of his robes.
thats a tall order for any monk.. with all those secular amenities surrounding them all the time and living in the midst of greed, anger and all other negative influences, it would be one tough job to live a whole life isolated from modern world only offering prayers and spreading the buddhist doctrines...
demanding perfection from monks could have positive influences for prosperity of buddhism but again, are we living up to the expectation and meeting all the standards, ethics, values, duties as we are supposed to... after all, monk are human being just like us... if lamas were to be disqualified purely based on not being able to refrain from being angry, greed, desire etc.... there would be hadly any lamas around..
It is the general Buddhist procedure that one’s own pleasure and pain are acheived by oneself and not from the outside, and that, therefore, sentient beings themselves must understand and implement practices to bring about their own happiness. Thus, the most efficacious way to help others is through teaching what should be adopted in practice and what should be discarded from among current behavior. There is no way to do this unless you come to know all of the topics involved in what should be adopted in practice and what should be discarded—you must become omniscient. As mentioned earlier, there is no way to accomplish this except by removing the obstructions to omniscience, and one who has overcome, utterly and forever, the obstructions to omniscience is a Buddha
omniscience is a tricky word.. it could be taken few ways.. if you go by dictionary then it would mean somebody knowing completely everything past, present, future of each and every human being and every things you can think of.. other way would be i guess just having a deeep understanding and knowledge of almost everything.. it would not be too smart to say that a human being know completely the 100 % of whole universe, unless it is god.... then ofcourse it is different scenario..
