E-talk on Video with Kazi Sherpa

Mr. Kazi Sherpa is a teacher, educator and a social worker. Throughout his life, he has tirelessly strived to improve the educational and social wellbeing of people in the Solukhumbu region. Kazi Sherpa was born in Darjeeling, India on October 8, 1948. Upon completing his schooling from St. Alphonsus' High School in Darjeeling in 1965, he moved to Solukhumbu, Nepal where has been living and working ever since.

Kazi Sherpa earned an M.A. in English Language in Literary Studies from Nottingham University, UK in 1994. Kazi Sherpa received his B.A. and B.Ed from Tribhuwan University, Nepal in 1980. Still in his teens, Kazi Sherpa began teaching at Khumjung Primary School, Solu Khumbu, Nepal 1967, and thus embarked on a career path that he continues to embrace today.



As School Supervisor of the Himalayan Trust Schools in Solukhumbu from 1971 to 1975, Kazi Sherpa supervised more than 25 primary schools founded and run by Sir Edmund Hillary in addition to helping build school buildings, hostels and clinics. From 1975 to 2002, he was the Headmaster of Junbesi Secondary School, Solukhumbu, where he taught Nepali, English and Social Studies to the higher secondary level and Mathematics and Physical Education to the lower secondary level students. He upgraded the school from primary to junior high school in 1972 and then to high school in 1983. During this period, he played an active role in uplifting the standard of the education system in Solukhumbu district.

Kazi Sherpa's community service activities are equally impressive. Some of them include the following.

•  Chairman for an NGO – Himalayan Community Development Organization (HCDO). It is conducting a Co-operative Trekking Program with the help of Himalayan Project Nepal (HEPRON), an NGO registered in Denmark. Besides that HCDO has been providing scholarships for more than 35 financially weak students for their High School and College education. (2003-2005)
•  Project In-charge and Coordinator for Sherpa Architecture Restoration Program, Junbesi, and SoluKhumbu. ( 2000/2002)
•  Founding member of the Co-operative Banking and Co-operative Store in Junbesi .The banking program was initiated from a 5-member team and now has over 100 members and is running successfully. (1996/2002)
•  Worked as General Secretary for the Junbesi Public Library (established in 1990), sponsored by Dr Antonio Neubauer, USA. (1990/1998)
•   Founding member and General Secretary for the Himalayan Conservation Foundation (HCF), an NGO based in Junbesi established in 1995.
•   General Secretary for the Himalayan Sherpa Buddhist School, Phugmoche, SoluKhumbu (established in 1991) for 5 years since its establishment.
•   Established the first Himalayan Trust Health Clinic at Junbesi in February 1971 where he provided voluntary service for the following eight years.
